Konukot – Women's Cottage
Konukot (Women’s Cottage) is a night shelter for homeless women. Most of the women who use the service are addicted to drugs and/or suffer from psychological problems. The shelter is open from 19:00 p.m. until 12:00 noon. Those who want to use the service need to enter the house before 1:00 am. The shelter is closed during the afternoon. Light refreshments are offered in the evening and breakfast is served in the morning. The women can do their laundry, take a shower and obtain second-hand clothing provided by the Icelandic Red Cross. Any use of alcohol and other intoxicating substances is forbidden in the house. The women who stay at the shelter are assisted by Red Cross volunteers and staff.
At Konukot we try to create a comfortable and warm environment, as prescribed by the Red Cross charter.

Mentoring Project – mentor is the way!
Icelandic society has much to offer but it can be difficult for individuals to make use of resources at hand if they do not know where to look for information. A mentoring project like this one is essential in aiding immigrant women in their adaptation into Icelandic society.
The ideology of the project is to build a bond between an Icelandic woman (the “mentor”) and an immigrant woman (the “mentee”) who both benefit from the relationship;. The mentor supports the mentee both as a friend and a guide. An important aim of the project is to build a constructive and positive relationship between immigrant women and Icelandic women who are able to exchange information and knowledge on equal grounds.
Do you want to participate?
The project is open for everyone. If you are interested in being part of the mentoring project, please contact the Reykjavik branch of the Red Cross (telephone: 545 0400, e-mail: reykjavik@redcross.is). We will call you or send you an e-mail as soon as we find a suitable mentor for you.
If you live in the area of Fjarðabyggð, the east part of Iceland, please contact the Fjarðabyggð branch of the Red Cross (telephone: 470 9021/897 0916).
