Icelandic Red Cross

The Icelandic Red Cross was founded on December 10th in 1924.

Steingrímur Matthíasson, doctor and Þorbjörg Ásmundsdóttir wanted to develop and strengthen the medical and nursing field in Iceland so they sought inspiration to the Danish Red Cross. Sveinn Björnsson the first president of Iceland was also the first chairmain of the Icelandic Red Cross. Ever since, the organization has been a leading force in healthcare, social care and humanitarian aid in Iceland. The Icelandic Red Cross is also an auxiliary to the Icelandic government, f.ex. in the field og disaster and emergency services and refugee services.

Our vision

We are a leading organization in humanitarian aid in Iceland and we build all our projects on voluntary service. The Icelandic community relies and trusts the Red Cross during crisis and disasters. We mobilise people to be a positive change in their environment.

Our approach

We protect and uphold the rights of people and their right to decide. We put a special emphasis on marginalized and vulnerable groups and our foundations are the Fundamental Principles and the Sustainable Developmental Goals.

Our mission

Our strategy is a guiding light and an inspiration to us so we can have real impact in our work.
