The Icelandic Red Cross was founded around ambulance services in 1924. A contract with the welfare ministry was signed in 1997 to ensure safety and responsibility in operations.

Individual transferred with an ambulance and is covered with health insurance in Iceland pays a fee of 9.081 ISK (valid from 1.1.2024) Retirement pensioners aged 70 and over pay a lower fee, or 6,811 ISK. People on disability benefits (60% or more) get 50% discount, but they must apply for it separately to the Red Cross for the first time and present a disability card from the National Insurance Institute.

Registration is coordinated by 112 according to an official decision. 112 registers all transfers and sends a notification electronically to the Red Cross. Information that are sent are; name, locations, amount and address, details on reason for transfer are not included.
Special fund runs the project called "Ambulance fund". The Icelandic Red Cross is responsible for all ambulances in Iceland according to an agreement with SÍ.
