Disaster and emergency services
Mass shelters are operated in times of emergency to provide safe shelter to victims of natural disasters and other serious events. They provide them with basic necessities.

Disaster and emergency services
The role of the Icelandic Red Cross, when a state of emergency is declared, is to open humanitarian assistance centres for those affected. Reception facilities are typically opened in school housing in local communities around the country. There people are provided with first aid and food, clothes and temporary shelter until they can return home or move into more permanent accommodation.
Emergency response team
When an emergency occurs due to a natural disaster or local accidents, the Red Cross emergency response system is put into action.
Mass care centres
Mass care centres are opened during crisis and disasters to offer shelter, food, clothing and psychosocial support.
